From campfire principle to engineered fire research

Water cools. Dirt covers. Sedi-Slurry engineers the combination.

People have long used water and dirt together to put out campfires: water cools the burning material while earth can cover and isolate embers. Sedi-Slurry, originated by Christopher Woody, asks whether that familiar principle can be scientifically evaluated, engineered, and safely scaled for wildland-fire direct attack, using purpose-built equipment with suitable local soil, sediment, or other characterized mineral material.

Sedi-Slurry is an unverified, research-stage direct-attack wildfire suppression concept intended for controlled evaluation against active flame and hot material. It asks whether water combined with appropriately characterized mineral earth can provide measurable advantages over water alone. It is not proposed as a long-term aerial retardant or indirect-attack fireline treatment, and no performance or safety claim is made before independent testing.

Research-stage disclosure. No certified prototype, approved formula, proven performance, or authorization for active-fire deployment is represented.

From campfire practice to engineered scale

At campfire scale, water cools burning material while dirt covers embers and reduces their contact with air. Sedi-Slurry does not claim to have invented that familiar practice. The contribution being developed is the apparatus and research platform needed to acquire or receive suitable earth or mineral material, screen and condition it, meter and combine it with water, inject it downstream of conventional pumps when appropriate, deliver it, bypass or isolate components, clear and purge the system, record operating data, and scale across multiple configurations.

Local-source path

Suitable soil or sediment available near a test location may be documented, screened, characterized as practical, combined with water, and evaluated in bounded tests. No predetermined proprietary mineral formulation is claimed; suitable mineral earth and locally available soil or sediment are treated as research variables. An untested local mixture is not controlled, standardized, or proven.

Prepared-material path

Documented mineral blends or other prepared material may be used when repeatability, transportability, or tighter material control is required.

The research hypothesis is that an engineered water-and-earth mixture may improve selected direct-attack outcomes compared with water alone in defined conditions. Water alone must serve as the scientific control so researchers can determine what additional effect, if any, comes from the mineral component. Comparative testing must establish whether, when, and with which materials that is true. No claim is made that every type of earth works, or that a water-and-earth mixture is already better than water. Optional cooled or temperature-conditioned material may be studied as a test variable, not as a proven benefit.

Direct attack, not retardant. Direct attack means application to active flame, burning fuels, embers, and hot material. Long-term aerial retardants are generally indirect-attack tools applied to unburned fuels ahead of a fire. Sedi-Slurry is not a retardant, is not an aerial “red slurry,” and is not an indirect-attack fireline treatment.

Test the familiar principle

Work may begin with documented local dirt or sediment and water in bounded bench, mechanical, hydraulic, and qualified controlled-fire trials before a final laboratory-verified formulation exists. Water alone is the scientific control; tests should compare it against local-source and characterized mineral-earth candidates under defined direct-attack conditions.
